Book Recommendation: Experiencing the Trinity
by Joe Thorn
Book review by Pastor Nick Spurgeon
It is one thing to know and understand different doctrinal truths about God and His character, but it is another thing to believe and experience how these truths affect our daily lives. In Experiencing the Trinity, Joe Thorn takes the reader through 50 different meditations on God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit in a way that shows us that biblical truths about God are not simply propositions that we must merely acknowledge for orthodoxy, but are truths to be stored down deep into our hearts for daily life.
What I personally loved about this book is that it is the product of the author walking through his own crucible of suffering. The author begins the book by saying, “What I have written here, I have primarily written for and to myself. I needed to hear these words during a desperate period of my life, and though that particular time of affliction has passed, I continue to need them today.” Each chapter, though no longer than two to three pages, is full of practical wisdom and application from a passage of scripture. In my opinion, it can be used as a daily devotional or simply a regular book to read through. It has certainly become one of my favorites. The book's theology is deep, the author's writing is clear, and the truths expounded are experiential. I would hope that everyone who reads this review would pick up a copy to read and a copy to give a friend.
