John 11:45-57

John 11:45-57

45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.

54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Reflection

Caiaphas, the high priest, unintentionally prophesied that Jesus would die as a substitute for the sake of others (John 11:51). The God of all grace is working out his plans at all times and in all places. Even those who challenge him are ultimately contributing to his purposes. He sits in heaven and laughs at those who plot and scheme against his saving purposes in his Son (Ps. 2:2–4).

Hebrews 10:26-39

Hebrews 10:26-39

26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For,

“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

Reflection

Once again, this section calls for endurance in the faith. This persecuted congregation has been through hard times (Heb. 10:32–33), but they have handled it well in the past. For the sake of Christ, they even “joyfully accepted the plundering of [their] property,” knowing that their eternal possession was far more valuable (v. 34). This section calls them to continue the battle. The difficulties are not over, and they must be careful not to throw it all away by giving up now (vv. 35–36).

Jesus himself warned us of the difficulties that would come to those who followed him. He told us that, “the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life” (Matt. 7:14), but in the end we are promised “great reward” (Heb. 10:35). We must keep our eyes on “what is promised” (v. 36), remembering “we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls” (v. 39). All those who love Christ will be strengthened by passages like these to keep fighting to the end.

Psalm 115:9-11

Psalm 115:9-11

O Israel, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.

Thoughts For Prayer

Following Christ requires a life of faith, but that does not mean we conduct a life of passivity. Genuine faith produces a war against sin that requires us to actively resist temptation. Pray that God would increase your faith in Christ so that you will find strength to battle temptation today.

Supported Workers: Emily (& Blake) Ackerson

    Country: Australia

Although 2024 was a challenge, Blake and Emily acknowledge how abundantly the Lord has provided for them. Praise him for Emily's continued recovery and for keeping Addie healthy. Praise God for the students who trusted Christ in 2024. Please pray for the Lord to establish them in their new faith and grow their love for Jesus. Pray for Chen as he returns home at the end of the month and that they can find him a healthy local church where he can continue to grow. Praise God for the summer mission held in December and pray for the students to continue to grow in making disciples as a new year begins. Pray for Pastor Victor and Kingsford Church as they continue to build relationships with students at the University of New South Wales. During the Christmas holiday fourteen Christian families hosted 42 international students. Pray that God would work through the love that was shared by these families. Praise God for the ways he worked through the two churches who sent teams from Tyler, Texas to minister there in 2024.

Guyana (South America). Population 819,594 Believers: 19.8%. Ministry among young people is vital because family life, further education, employment, and the future in general are great challenges. Most evangelical denominations have work there among the youth. Praise God for many decisions to follow Jesus; pray for effective discipleship. Iceland (Europe). Population: 375,318 Believers: 3.8%. The majority of Icelanders are Christian, but only nominally so. Biblical Christianity and a lifestyle of following Christ are alien concepts to most. Some of the more isolated areas are spiritual wastelands, with almost no active Christianity at all. Ask the Lord to break into Icelandic society and orchestrate a revival that touches every person and aspect of life. From Operation World DVD-ROM 2010 and www.operationworld.org
